"Bigfoot Supports Initiatives to Boost English Learning Among Filipino Students"
10,000 accounts of online English courses will be donated to DepEd in Cebu
February 20, 2006, Cebu City – Bigfoot Asia Pacific Foundation, Inc. (Bigfoot) is giving out free accounts of CleverCourse to about 10,000 high school students in Cebu city and province through the Department of Education’s local divisions. CleverCourse is an online English course developed by Cleverlearn, Ltd., an affiliate of Bigfoot Global Solutions, Inc.
Along with the new P5-million grant handed to the DepEd for IT education advancement in the city and province, this was announced by Bigfoot CEO, Joe Mercado, in a press conference held recently at the Bigfoot Center on F. Ramos st, Cebu city.
“We want to do our part in addressing the concerns of many sectors in the country about the decline of English proficiency among Filipino students and even, the workforce,” says Mr. Mercado.
As the country aims to capture about 5 percent of business process outsourcing globally by 2010 (amounting to as much as $10 billion), concerns over the industry’s competitiveness are being raised. Socio-economic pundits are warning that the English proficiency of the Filipino graduates has been deteriorating for years.
“With this program, we are sharing with the students the Cleverlearn English learning system and experience. And eventually, we hope this will help boost the quality of our graduates, particularly in the area of English language.”
Cleverlearn, a technology company, has invested millions of dollars to develop its own English learning system. It tapped language experts to design and develop CleverCourse, which is currently being used today by hundreds of thousands of subscribers in Asia, Europe and other parts of the globe. Each CleverCourse account in Germany, in fact, is sold for 20 Euros for a month’s subscription.
“In the near future, we might be expanding the scope of this project by making CleverCourse available to students all the country, especially in the public education system,” says Mr. Mercado.
